INF Treaty with new Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev agreed to remove all medium range missiles from Europe.
Problems caused by Communism 1. Under Communism (where the state gives you a job) there was little incentive to work hard or improve their skills 2. Soviets spent time & money on weapons so they could not provide basic food, clothing and shelter for its people. 3. Communists public image and economy was collapsing as Reagan and others called it the "Evil Empire". 4. TV shows depicting American social life were seen in the Communist enslaved states and the people asked, "why can't we live like that"? 5. Star Wars SDI space age weaponry the Soviets couldn't match.
Mikhail Gorbachev tries to save the Soviet Union through 1. Perestroika restructuring 2. Glasnost openness 3. By 1990 the Russian people elected Boris Yeltsin he resigned from the Communist Party, and declared the 15 Soviet Bloc countries free.
