3 weak Kings, 1 powerful king, Terror, 1 strong emperor  this was the ruling force in French politics.

The first three week kings ( Francis I, Charles IX, Henry III) were in constant struggle with religious war, Protestant v. Catholic and strongly influenced by their mother.

Read the first column of page 328. What happened @ the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre? over 100,000 Protestants were killed

How did the pope react to the massacre? minted a coin, sang songs, praised the king, hoped it was the final solution

Louis XIV comes to the throne and rules with absolute power. Ruled France over 70 years.

Louis XIV had the Palace of Versailles built to keep the nobility occupied.
