Revolution to Napoleon

Who was the influential man in the French government? p 340 Robespierre

How many died at the hands of the Committee? 341 40,000

What was abandoned as unworkable? 10 day week

By the time of the Reign of Terror when the masses rose up what did they try to eliminate? social class and make all Frenchmen equal

What seemed to be the idea? that if you guillotined enough dissenters, those left alive would be free equal and prosperous

A new government " National Assembly " was set up declaring all citizens equal with "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity"

The assembly began to guillotine traitors and anyone else who spoke out against the government.

Terror reigned as Atheism was promoted Christianity threatened

Changed week to 10 days long

In contrast the American Revolution was a success because it was not a social movement but rather grounded in principles, not merely selfish desires.

Americans declared independence for freedom not equality.

Eventually Robespierre was declared a tyrant and guillotined ending the Reign of Terror in France.
