Today scientists break Oklahoma into ten different geographic regions

Ozark Plateau Located in the northeast corner of the state many rich prairies and wooded areas. 

Where did the prehistoric Indians camp? p 8  along the river bluffs in caves.  How is the Illinois River popular today? p 8  for canoe and float trips, fishing.
Prairie Plains, Located just west of the Ozark Plateau, rich soil and grasslands.

What are some of the crops farmers grow in the prairie plains? p 8 strawberries, tomatoes. What's grown in the pic on p 9? corn

What is the cultural center of the area? Tulsa

Ouachita Mountains:

Located in south east Oklahoma it's the roughest land in the state.   Beautiful mountains

What are 3 of the major ridges in the Ouachita Mts?p 10 Winding Stair, Kiamichi, San Bois, Jack Fork, Buffalo, Blue Bouncer

Name and locate the largest tree in the state p 11 bald cypress, east of Broken Bow in McCurtain County.

Red River Plains   Located below the Ouachita Mts. very rich soil once covered by an ancient sea.

Name some of the fish in the red river. p 11 catfish, large/small/spotted/white mouth bass are native

Where do the native wildlife rest? Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge

How was Lake Texoma formed.  by a dam, Where did the name come from? p 111located on border of Texas and Oklahoma.

Sandstone Hills  Located west of the Prairie Plains (Sand Springs)  rich oil fields, with small farms and ranches.

Name three towns from this region. p 12 Sapulpa, Wewoka, McAlester

 

 

Arbuckle Mountains located south of the Sandstone Hills oldest mts system in Oklahoma

Name the three geological windows into our past. 12 Arbuckle Mts, Grand Canyon, Black Hills

What is faulted? tilted and folded? turned sidways or at angles.

How high is Turner Falls  77'

Red Bed Plains  Located in the middle of the state

What types of trees are located there? p 14 Cottonwood, cedars and willows.

What is the Great Salt Plains? p 15  a 40 Sqmi basin of sand once satruated by salt water formed about 270 million yrs ago.

Gypsum Hills located west of the Red Bed Plains a broken line of hills running north and south.

What was nicknamed the the "Glass Mountains" ? p 16 gypsum buttes west of Orienta.

High Plains  includes Oklahoma's panhandle region and the Black Mesa Oklahoma's highest peak.

What is grown there? p 17 hardy grasses and grains Mesquite and cedar
