Student Council Qualifications

Students running for the 2008-09 Executive Student Council or Class Representative must meet the following criteria:

1. Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

2. Must have attended GCS since January 2008.

3. Must have a lifestyle of godly character, leadership, scholarship, and service as follows:

Character

• Demonstrates Christ-like behavior in thought, word, and deed.
• Stands for righteousness.
• Upholds principles of morality and ethics.
• Shows courtesy, compassion, and respect for students, teachers, and administration.
• Exemplifies responsibility and dependability.

Leadership

• Takes leadership role seriously.
• Contributes ideas for projects.
• Inspires positive behavior in others.
• Displays spiritual and emotional maturity.
• Is willing to delegate responsibility.
• Is able to set goals and use methods to effectively accomplish them.
• Has a servant’s heart.

Scholarship

• Is prompt with homework and class assignments.
• Contributes to class discussions.
• Strives to do his/her best as unto the Lord.

Service

• Works well with others.
• Renders service cheerfully and enthusiastically.
• Operates towards others with compassion and humility.
• Displays courtesy to others.
• Is willing to offer volunteer service.

Responsibilities of Officers/Representatives

• President-

• Prepare an agenda for each weekly meeting and share with advisor prior to meeting.
• Work with vice-president in agenda planning.
• Verbally summarize the council’s decisions so the secretary may clearly record them in the minutes.
• Appoint committee chairperson for any special committees formed.
• Take an active interest in school sports and other extra-curricular activities.
• Represent student council via public speaking when necessary.
• Keep journal indicating details of planning for major annual activities to pass on to future president for reference.
• Keep an organized phone/address book of important contacts.
• Keep advisor informed concerning special committees.
• Communicate with advisor over summer months concerning what needs to be accomplished in the fall.
• Lead secondary in daily pledges and give school announcements.
• Attend church on a regular basis.

• Vice-president

• Assist the president in preparing weekly agendas.
• Be prepared to assume duties of president at anytime.
• Help explain opinions of the president.
• Contribute ideas during student council meetings.
• Assume leadership of important committees when asked to do so.
• Work to keep “peace” among council members and student body as a whole.
• Ensure parliamentary procedure is adhered to during all council meetings.
• Attend church on a regular basis

• Secretary

1. Distribute weekly agendas.

2. Keep record of attendance during weekly meetings.

3. Record minutes of meetings.

4. Type all records, minutes, and agendas in a simple and

organized format.

5. Distribute minutes of previous meeting for council approval.

6. Keep record of motions before the council.

7. Read each motion after proposed.

8. Keep notebook of all minutes to aid future student councils.

9. Type all official correspondence.

10. Keep a file of all correspondence.

11. Produce student council directory.

12. Attend church on a regular basis.

D. Treasurer

1. Receive all money from fund-raisers.

2. Prepare financial reports when necessary.

3. Turn all monies into office for deposit.

4. Work with advisor and officers on activity budgets.

5. Attend church on a regular basis.

E. Chaplain

1. Open all student council meetings with prayer.

2. Pray on a regular basis for students, staff, and student council.

3. Pray before any games.

4. Give daily devotions before school announcements.

5. Attend church on a regular basis.

F. Class representatives

1. Develop communications with students.

2. Communicate student input/concerns to student council.

3. Report all information discussed in student council meeting to

respective classes in next homeroom class.
