General Position Description
Title: ______ Student Council Sponsor______________________________
Department: _____ GCS __Secondary_______________________________
Primary function: Make a general statement, one to three sentences long, highlighting the basic function(s) and objectives for which you are responsible.
Oversee decisions and activities of Student Council including the back to school party, the Hoedown, The Christmas Social, Homecoming and Spirit Week, Valentine’s Day Fundraiser, and Student Council Elections. You are the main connection and person responsible for ensuring that some of the school’s biggest events pull off. Student Council Sponsor is the mediator between the students and the administration in order to get the logistics of the events to follow through and be able to be approved and completed.
Responsibilities and duties: List a minimum of ten areas for which you are responsible. (Attach another sheet of paper if necessary.) Note the five most important, using numbers one through five. Be brief and use specific action verbs (i.e., file, operate, prepare, assist, evaluate, instruct, support, type, coordinate, etc.). Emphasize what you do, rather than how you do it.
Preparing Purchase Orders for any financial purchase request (first give to Joann McFarland and she
will forward to Pam Blanchard).
Meet with principal in regards to room/location reservations needed
Coordinate the Back to School Party (alongside Executive Student Council)
Hold Student Council Elections for class representatives (3 from each grade)
See You at the Pole (Exec. Chaplain takes charge)
Coordinate the Fall Social (Hoedown)- Decorate Gym at lunch to hype up event
Coordinate the Christmas Social (this year we did a service project) (Candy-cane fundraiser possible)
Coordinate Homecoming and Spirit Week: Work alongside Kathy Kubow/Cheer Clinic
Create Homecoming Biographies/Program (including King and Queen and K5 attendants)
Order and Design Homecoming T-shirts (Fundraiser)
Assist in Valentine’s Day Fundraiser (candy grams, singing telegrams, roses)
Also, small social (cupcakes, music, decorations) in gym during lunch
Hold Student Council Elections for following year’s Executive Council
Reserve sound equipment for special events (Marc Langebartels)
Describe you position responsibilities as they relate to:
1. Planning/recommending prior to decision-making.
There is a lot of planning and decision-making that goes into being a sponsor for this event. The students often feel powerless since they aren’t allowed to have very much delegated responsibility. Everything is required to go through you as the sponsor, and then take everything directly to Joann McFarland. Brainstorming with executive student council before meeting with entire student council is key to helping the meetings be efficient.
2. Decision making (types of decisions for which you are responsible).
You must decide on themes for events as well as timing. Student involvement: Take only as many students with you to an event that will be helpful (Preferably only Executive Student Council or Class Presidents). Party Planning which includes amounts of food to order. Fundraising ideas.
Calendar: List activities including planning timetable.
