French Legacy in the New World

 

    First French explorers  came in search of 
                    the Northwest Passage.

    
Giovanni da Verrazano  first French explorer

                

Jacques Cartier  discovered the St. Lawrence River
       

    Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec, and became the Father of New France.

       

Robert Cavalier de la Salle  first to sail down 
                Mississippi River and claim for King 
                of France, Louis XIV  "Louisiana"

       

    French Colonies

    1. French did build forts along the St. Lawrence 
                and Ohio River 

    2.  developed a good relationship with the Indians.

    3.  never heavily populated Why?

            1.  most French colonists were hunters and 
        traders and never established permanent homes.

            2.  lacked self-government

            3.  lacked religious freedom.

    French Legacy

    language, geographical names, religion, government, customs, and traditions.  

    New Orleans best known city of French 
                    heritage in America.
