Civil War Begins     

 Fort Sumter April 1861
    -
The first engagement of the Civil War took
place at Fort Sumter on April 12 and 13, 1861.
After 34 hours of fighting, the Union
surrendered the fort to the Confederates.
From 1863 to 1865, the Confederates at Fort
Sumter withstood a 22 month siege by Union
forces. During this time, most of the fort was
reduced to brick rubble. Fort Sumter became
a national monument in 1948.

    Causes of the Civil War
    1.  South Carolina secedes from the Union
    2.  Lincoln raises an army to preserve the Union
    3.  South rises to preserve states' rights.
    4.  North wanted to end slavery
    5.  South wanted to preserve their
                    economic lifestyle.


Advantages of the North
    1.  Superior man power
    2.  Skilled laborers and many factories
    3.  Railroad transportation

Advantages of the South
    1.  Confederates had a head start in war
    2.  Talented military leaders
    3.  Defending home turf
