Founding of the Tuskegee Institute

l	Booker  T. Washington Dedicated his life to the cause of black equality in America. 1.  recognized as the most influential spokesman for his race. 2.  One of the original founders of the Tuskegee Institute.

 

k	George Washington Carver 1.  Set important example for freemen.  2.  Received education and excelled in scientific research. 3.  Discovered over 100 different uses for the peanut.

1877  was the official end of Reconstruction
    1.  the last of the federal troops were
                    removed from the south
    2.  the south began to recover from
                    the Civil War
    3.  Plantations turned into sharecropping.
            a.  plantation owner divided land
                    into small plots,
            b.  each worked by a former slave
                                     and his family

              c.  most sharecroppers were very poor!!
