        Election of 1932  FDR won over Hoover, by insisting that it was time for a "New Deal".  The issue of government relief programs played a major role in the election.

Read p 543 What is a "lame duck" session?  
Days between election (Nov) and inauguration (Jan)

Why is a long lame duck period difficult for newly elected officials?  

 

They don't have the power of the lame duck President.

How did the 20th Amendment help the problem?

It shortened the lame duck period from March 20th to January 20th.

 

 

FDR's inaugural address

" ... the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

FDR had the support of Congress.    

    1.  first Hundred Days Roosevelt presented Congress  with a mass of legislation aimed at social reform  and economic recovery

   

2.  Brain Trust was FDR's group of close advisers they advised the unproven economic theories of John Maynard Keynes.

Read p 544.  What was Keynes' proposals?
He advocated central planning and massive economic and social intervention  on the part of the government. (Social Welfare)

            What is "priming the pump"?
Giving Americans government jobs so they will spend their paycheck         and "prime the economic pump" of the U.S.

 How did FDR reinterpret the Constitution?
He said the fed gov should create the conditions for happiness and prosperity by providing federally guaranteed jobs, housing, income, and old-age pensions

3.  Eleanor Roosevelt became a powerful figure in the     New Deal.  She promoted welfare programs and  a world organization to replace the failed League  of Nations.
