GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE NHS: The National Junior Honors Society is a service organization that recognizes students in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades who excel in academics, leadership, service, and character. In order for a student to qualify for induction, he or she must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA. Those who qualify academically are required to fill out an activity form, which will outline that student's service activities in and outside of school. This form will be evaluated by all the teachers that student has had. Those same teacher will also evaluate the potential inductee's character, in order to gain a clear picture of the student in the four areas of emphasis in the NHS: scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Each potential inductee will then be voted on by the committee, whether or not, based on the information that has been gained, that student should be inducted into the NHS. Once inducted, the student must maintain at all times a GPA of at least 3.5. If the student falls below that average, a period of probation follows, in which the student must bring his or her grades back up. If the grades are not brought up, the student will be dismissed from the Society. The student must also conduct himself or herself in a way that reflects the criteria for membership. The student must maintain good godly character; be involved in school, church, or community service; and demonstrate good leadership qualities. If the student engages in activity which is in violation of the GCS student code of conduct, that student will be reviewed by a committee of teachers and/or administrators, and punishment will be determined thereby. Once the committee has voted on the potential inductees, the parents and student will be notified whether or not they will be inducted. Once the parents have been notified that their student will be inducted, they must compile a short list of awards, achievements, etc. that will be read off during the induction as the student is walking to the stage. This list would include academic awards, special achievements of any kind, service time for any organization, etc. The students and parents will then receive further instruction regarding the proceedings of the induction. The members of the NHS participate in a couple of service projects each year. Last year, we helped Geof Jackson Ministries assemble a large shipment of supplies to be sent to an orphanage in Kaliningrad, in the former Soviet Union. Each year, we also help in the Kindergarten graduation at the end of the school year.
